Chess is played by two players on an 8×8 board with 16 pieces each: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Each piece moves a specific way — pawns forward (capturing diagonally), bishops along diagonals, rooks along ranks and files, knights in an L-shape, queens in any straight line, and the king one square in any direction.
